Notes
The Corrigan factor will be very strong in this riding; Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan’s wife, Kathy Corrigan is running in this riding for the NDP. The primary local issue concerns the remand (prison) centre proposed for the Willingdon-Canada Way area.

The prison issue is HUGE here in Burnaby. Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds is presenting a petition with 4000 plus names in the legislature this week, all in opposition to the prison being built at the proposed location. Mr. Nuraney is in trouble with the voters in his riding and this riding is now up for grabs.

Kathy Corrigan is a rock star of a candidate, she might be our next education minister, deer lake residents wan’t someone who will fight for them . i feel bad for the weak nobody running against her, all he has going for him is his party’s money

    John;

I have to stop reading these blogs… they’re bending my perspective.

You are right, Kathy has a resume and has contributed to her community.

It seems that John Nuraney has had an interesting life too, has certainly had success in his field of business as well as contributing to those less fortunate in the community.

So let me ask you. Beyond a different ideological perspective, on what basis is he a “weak nobody”?

i have nothing against john nuraney, i’m sure he’s a wonderful person, he just has absolutely no say in this government, he’s a doormat for gordon campbell as with most of the bcliberal mla’s. Mla’s that stand up to gordon campbell get punished eg. paul nettleton, elayne brenzinger. deer lake residents need a rep. that wont cower and hide like john nuraney, he’s just too scared to stand up for his constituents because he’s knows the consequences. Kathy corrigan will be a powerhouse in the leg. she’ll have more influence in oppposition than john nuraney has now, also if john nuraney REALLY cared about the less fortunate, he wouldn’t have anything to do with the bcliberal party. he’s probably a great guy. why’s he been a backbencher for 8 years, i don’t live in this riding so it’s up to the voters

  5. Steve (Burnaby) commented -
    (May 11, 2009 @ 20:20):

I was hoping to vote independent but found there to be no independents running in this riding. My idea was to protest against both the liberal and ndp as i’m not confident in either leader. The Green party for me are a fringe group that represent special interests so i wont vote for them.

So i decided to take a look at the major parties that are running. One of my concerns was the threat of crown corporations being sold off. There have been reports in the media of this happening but i was completely shocked when i learned that these private hydo projects on BCs rivers is basically a vehicle for the liberals to grease their own pockets. Why have so many BC Liberal insiders move to the IPP industry where they have dished out $30 billion in contracts for electricity that BC Hydro could produce at a fraction of that?

    Check this;

Geoff Plant, former BC Liberal Attorney General, now chair of Renaissance Power.
Mark Grant, BC Liberal executive director, resigns December 12, 2008 to join Rupert Peace Power.
David Cyr, former Assistant to BC Liberal Minister Mike de Jong, is now a director at Plutonic Power.
Robert Poore, recently worked under the Provincial Revenue Minister of the Province of BC, now is a senior director at Plutonic Power.
Tom Syer, who has held a variety of senior positions in the BC Government including Gordon Campbell’s Deputy Chief of Staff, is now a director at Plutonic Power.
Bill Irwin, after holding key positions in the BC Ministries of Land and Water, and Crown Lands, now is a director at Plutonic Power.
Bruce Young, has held several high profile positions with the BC Liberal party and lobbied his own party on behalf of Katabatic Power is listed as a director of Atla Energy.
Stephen Kukucha, former senior policy advisor for the BC Ministry of Environment, is now president and CEO of Atla Energy.
Bob Herath, former Assistant Regional Water Manager for the BC Ministry of Environment is now with Syntaris Power.
Paul Taylor, after his work as President and CEO of crown corporation ICBC as well as high level positions in the BC Government, is now President and CEO of Naikun Wind Energy Group.
Michael J. O’Conner, former President and CEO of Crown Corporation BC Transit, now holds senior positions at Naikun.
Jackie Hamilton, formerly held various BC Government environmental assessment and regulatory management positions, is now a VP at Cloudworks Energy.

For me this is at best completely unethical, at worst criminal.

After reading this and considering the fact the liberals want to dump a prison in my neighborhood, i feel i have no choice but to vote NDP which is exactly what i’ll be doing. I only hope that the NDP dont drive business out of BC like they’ve done in the past. They have a responsibility to go out of their way to keep BC and business friendly place and to go even further than the liberals have done to attract business to BC. My vote comes with that expectation and it will be taken away as easily as it was given if this doesnt happen.

  6. Jeff commented -
    (May 12, 2009 @ 11:37):

I contacted all three MLAs for this riding. I am concerned about the noise levels off of highway #1. I got the best answer from John Nuraney. He has contacted and written the highway minstry to address the subject. Kathy won’t have much sway if her party doesn’t get in.

  7. Kina commented -
    (May 12, 2009 @ 17:16):

No to remand centre. Vote Kathy Corrigan!

  8. John commented -
    (May 12, 2009 @ 18:53):

Vote for someone who can do something for our riding. NDP will not be in power, so leave Kathy on the Burnaby school board where she will be able to do something there.

  9. Brad commented -
    (May 12, 2009 @ 19:08):

Getting rid of Nuraney will not stop the remand center from being built here. You have to go after AG Wally Opal and Gordon Campbell!
