In her concession speech the night of the election, Carole James claimed that the NDP had received their greatest support in 23 years. I went back and looked at some of the previous elections, and there were a few things I wanted to point out:
1. NDP actually received more votes in 2005 than in 2009.
2. The NDP actually won their greatest proportion of the vote in 1979 (46%) when they lost to the Socreds under Bennett Jr.
3. The NDP won their greatest number of votes back in 1986 (824,544) when they lost in a “landslide” to the Socreds under Vander Zalm.
4. Listed below are the election years since the first NDP win in order of popular vote received by NDP. NDP wins in bold:
Year NDP% Seats (Seat%)
1979 45.99 26/57 (46)
1983 44.94 22/57 (39)
1986 42.60 22/69 (32)
2009 41.97 35/85 (41)
2005 41.52 33/79 (42)
1991 40.71 51/75 (68)
1996 39.45 39/75 (52)
1972 39.59 38/55 (69)
1975 39.16 18/55 (33)
2001 21.56 2/79 (3)
The 5 best elections for the NDP (in terms of vote %) were losses! 3 of the 5 worst elections were wins (all except being thrown out in 1975 and 2001)! Clearly the NDP can’t win unless the centre-right vote is divided, but this still really shocked me.
