You can count me in the advanced voting statistics; I voted today. The process was routine and a snap – I handed in my voter registration card and driver’s license to the registration desk. Some kind lady wrote my name and address on a slip, and gave it back to me. I then handed in this slip to another table where I received two ballots. I voted.

The only thing that struck me was that the last names of all the candidates were in huge font, and then they repeated the name and the party affiliation of the people in question in smaller font. I can’t recall whether the names on the ballot were in random order or not. I do recall, however, that because I have 5 candidates in my electoral district, that one slot was blank. The most candidates in any electoral district is six for this election.

After voting, I received a circular sticker that said “I voted!” and I put it on my fleece as I left the building.

Thanks for keeping the conversation civil (plenty of good debate), and we will be resuming our coverage of the BC Election as it goes into the last 10 days before people cast their ballots.

In some ways, there are some comparisons with this election to this playoff series with Chicago.

The federal Liberals are going to have their convention in Vancouver this weekend which may take some of the limelight from the media. They will be having it at the new downtown convention centre.

I had originally intended to post an analysis of First Nations and polling stations in the 2005 elections (for the purposes of later comparing it with the 2009 election results) but I seem to have caught food poisoning (not the swine flu!). I don’t want to explain the symptoms on this post in case if you are eating, but suffice to say, it has immobilized me and I hope it will last no longer than a day. It has been nasty since 3am this morning and I haven’t been able to sleep for more than half an hour without having to return to the bathroom. As I write this it is ever-so-slightly better, probably because there’s nothing left in my digestive system at all.

Feel free to use this post to comment on anything in the BC Election – I won’t moderate anything except outright spam. I did notice that two of you (Glass and Quimby) were throwing insults at each other, and I have removed them. Thanks.

I have installed an option for commenter to edit their comments up to 5 minutes after they have officially posted their comments, or up to the time that another person leaves a comment; whichever is shorter. You will see this when you post a comment, there will be an “Edit Comment” link right below your comment.

I have removed the “Issues” and “Swing Seat” pages. The Swing Seat page will come back for sure as soon as I have properly prepared it (the only guarantee on the list will be Delta South – I do not think all of 2005’s close calls will be swing seats this time around), but I am debating whether I have enough time to maintain the “Issues” page in any useful format. My initial inclination is to keep it off the site.

Finally, in address to comments; I am not going to install any official forum software; this is not the function of the site. Moderating comments consumes time, and although the quality of comments received as of late has been good, if it doesn’t stay that way then I will have to look into it. I was not considering a “real name” policy, but I generally consider people commenting with their real names to be more credible than those that do not.

Those of you who are observant may have noticed I have removed all Google advertising off the site about a week ago; this site does not generate any advertising revenue.

In terms of readability of comments, I am considering changing the order of comments from oldest-to-newest to newest-to-oldest. Any comments on this?

I looked into threaded comments, but I decided against it. HTML in comments are already enabled for those that know how to use it.

I may try to enhance the look of the links on the top part of the site, but other than this, I do not plan any major cosmetic improvements.

Suggestions in terms of user interface, or site friendliness will be considered. As you might tell, “minimalistic” is the theme here – I want the bulk of the time I spend on the site to be on content.
